the how

  • Format. Available as a personalized burger box, a matching fries carton, or both sold together as a combo.
  • Content suggestions.
  • Use burger boxes for cold food such as:
  • Deli sandwiches, wraps, rolls, filled croissants
  • Pies, tarts, quiche, or frittata
  • Sushi
  • Charcuterie, tapas
  • Salads; pasta, noodle, leaf, etc
  • Stuffed mushrooms, arancini, croquettes
  • Bruschetta or crostini
  • Use fries cartons for cold snacks such as:
  • Veggie sticks and dips
  • Cheese straws, breadsticks, or grissini, plain or wrapped in prosciutto
  • Pretzel rods, plain or chocolate-dipped
  • Fruit skewers or watermelon fries
  • Mini antipasto or caprese skewers
  • Popcorn
  • Chips or pita chips
  • Pickle spears
  • Personalization. Printed with your own party name, theme, or a made-up drive-thru-style logo; send a color palette, invitation, or inspiration photos and the design gets built to match.
  • Finish. Some sellers offer a choice of glossy or matte paper.
  • Assembly. Boxes usually ship fully assembled and ready to fill, so there’s nothing to fold together when they arrive.
  • Set size. Comes in sets of 20 and up, scaling to 100 or 200.
  • Process & lead time. Most sellers ask for your theme, name, age, colors, and any logo notes at checkout, then send a digital proof within 24 to 48 hours and only start printing once you approve it — plan on ordering a couple of weeks out to leave room for revisions and shipping.
  • Matching pieces. One seller offers a matching range of other products, such as popcorn boxes, drink cups, and chip bags, that they can apply the same design to.
  • Preparation. These are made from paper, so line them with wax paper or parchment before adding anything greasy.

the why

WHY This Idea?

  • Attention to detail; it’s often the clever little details — not the food itself — that guests photograph, share, and remember
  • Talking point; the fast food box format is instantly recognizable, so seeing it customized with the event branding will bring a smile to guests’ faces
  • Substantial portions; allows you to serve larger, more filling portions that guests can still eat standing up, without needing to sit down at a table
  • Less congestion; pre-portioned into individual boxes, guests can grab one quickly instead of queuing at the buffet while the person in front slowly loads up their plate
  • Atmosphere; guests can eat while chatting and mingling, which helps keep the energy up
  • Less mess; individual boxes mean no spills at the buffet table, no half-empty serving trays, and no one picking food up with their hands
  • Personalized; customizing boxes with a name, theme, or a made-up drive-thru logo is a fun way to add a personal touch and give your buffet a professionally-catered look
  • Photo-worthy; a great photo opportunity for guests to share on social media
  • Unusual; a less common way to present party food that will impress guests
  • Uniformity; ensures any homemade dishes made by friends and family still fit your overall event design or color scheme

the why

Why You Need Small Plates / Bites

  • Visual impact; individual portions lend a stylish, modern, and professionally-catered look to your spread
  • Reinvented; makes simple, home-made, or store-bought foods look and feel more special
  • Portion control; easier to regulate portion size and reduce over-consumption of expensive items
  • Batch cooking; dishes can be made in big batches in advance then portioned at the last minute
  • Work-load; friends and family can contribute dishes which can then be divided into appetizer cups, takeout boxes, mason jars, or martini glasses to make them look more stylish
  • Less waste; guests tend to take one portion instead of loading up their plate so there’s far less waste
  • Clear up; high-quality disposables can be recycled or thrown away after the event to reduce clearing and cleaning time

ADVICE FROM A PRO

Matt’s tip

Matt James professional event planner

“This is a great way to add a playful twist to simple but filling cold party foods, such as deli sandwiches, wraps, pies, and tarts, and make them feel more special.

Or check out my other post for Takeout Boxes — which can also be customized — that are better for foods like noodles, pasta, and salads.

While these look great arranged in rows and grids, too many can make your buffet table look flat, so don’t forget to add height by arranging some on treat stands and risers (see links below). For more about the three simple rules for layout: groups, rows, and levels, see my Dessert Table Layout page because the principles are the same for buffet tables.

I once went to an event where they had them displayed on elaborate silver tiered stands and trays — with staff in traditional butler uniforms with white gloves — and the high/low contrast of fast food given a silver-service presentation made everyone smile.

I’d also suggest displaying a printable sign (see links below) to identify what’s in the boxes to avoid guests fumbling around and opening them, then putting them back if they don’t want what’s inside.

To reduce lines at the buffet table, make these grab-and-go by serving with a small disposable fork (see links below) inside the box (if required, depending on the food) or stuck into the fries cartons.

Alternatively, prep them in advance but bring them out as a late-night snack when guests just need some carb-heavy, stodgy snacks to absorb some of the alcohol!
