Party Food Served in Shooters

the idea

Give simple snacks like chicken skewers, spring rolls, shrimp cocktail, pasta, and veggies a stylish makeover by serving them in individual disposable shooter glasses.

the how

  • Fill with:
  • Skewers in a dipping sauce, such as chicken satay with peanut sauce or cheese-stuffed tortellini with pesto,
  • Skewered charcuterie, caprese salads, or olives and feta cheese
  • Layered salads like feta, tomato, and cucumber,
  • Shrimp cocktail,
  • Spring / Summer rolls
  • Chilled soup or savory mousses,
  • Salty snacks, nuts, or trail mix,
  • Or veggie sticks in a dip.
  • Prepare in advance. Assemble dips, salads, and mousses ahead of time and keep chilled until ready to serve; add anything that might turn soggy or soft just before serving.
  • Size. These range from around 2oz up to 5oz, but I recommend a minimum 3oz glass.
  • Set size. Comes in packs of around 24 up to 100 or more, depending on the seller.
  • Personalize: Customize by adding a sticker (see links below).

the why

WHY This Idea?

  • Elevated; a low-effort way to make simple, home-made, or store-bought foods look and feel more special
  • Snack Size; perfect for serving smaller snacks for guests to graze on during a cocktail party
  • Less Congestion; allows guests to ‘grab and go’ to reduce lines and congestion around the buffet table
  • Atmosphere; guests can eat while chatting and mingling, which helps keep the energy up
  • Quantities; easier to visualize quantity needed per person compared to planning a large shared salad bowl or soup tureen
  • Less mess; individual shooters mean no messy buffet table spills, no half-empty serving bowls, and no one mixing up serving spoons
  • Inexpensive; a cost-effective party idea that won’t blow your budget
  • Value; low cost idea that creates a big impression
  • Reusable; can sometimes be washed and re-used for future events

the why

Why You Need Small Plates & Bites

  • Visual impact; individual portions lend a stylish, modern, and professionally-catered look to your buffet
  • Special occasions should feel special; presentation makes party food look and feel less everyday
  • Portion control; easier to regulate portion size and reduce over-consumption of expensive items
  • Batch cooking; dishes can be made in big batches in advance then portioned at the last minute
  • Work-load; friends and family can contribute dishes which can then be divided into appetizer cups, takeout boxes, mason jars, or shooters to make them look more stylish
  • Less waste; guests tend to take one portion instead of loading up their plate so there’s far less waste
  • Clear up; high-quality disposables can be recycled or thrown away after the event to reduce clearing and cleaning time

ADVICE FROM A PRO

Matt’s tip

Matt James professional event planner

“This is one of my favorite ways to dress up ordinary foods and snacks and make them more appealing. Just a little clever styling and presentation can completely change people’s perception of a dish.

Check out my Pinterest board for more menu ideas, both sweet and savory. And if you’re after dessert inspiration specifically, take a look at my Disposable Shooter Glasses post, which covers mousses, jellos, and layered fruit desserts served the same way.

These look best when presented in groups of the same snack, arranged in rows, and displayed on square or rectangular premium disposable serving plates or on tiered stands / risers (see links below).

For more about the three simple rules for layout; groups, rows, and levels, see my Dessert Table Layout page because the principles are the same for buffet tables.

Note that disposable shooter glasses come in different sizes, ranging from 1.75 oz to 5 oz. I’d recommend using at least a 3 oz as anything less would probably be a bit too small a portion.

To reduce lines at the buffet table, make these grab-and-go by serving with a small cocktail pick, mini fork, or mini spoon (see links below) depending on the dish.

Remember to order the right size spoon / fork depending on the size of your shooter glasses. Mini spoons and forks are typically around 4″, and regular spoons and forks are closer to 6″.

To personalize, you could add a custom sticker (links below) or use personalized disposable spoons / forks printed with your event name (see links below).

Although these are intended to be disposable shooter glasses, some people have said they pop them in the dishwasher so they can be used again for future events.

For more individual serving ideas like this, check out the Cold Small Plates section of my Buffet Table Ideas page or my Dessert Table Presentation page for sweet treats.”
