Fun Facts Napkins

the idea

Help break the ice and encourage guests to interact by discovering fun facts they might not know about the guest of honor, printed onto cocktail napkins served with their drinks.

the how

  • Format. Four versions to pick from:
  • A list of several fun facts printed on every napkin.
  • One fact per napkin, so guests get a different one with each drink.
  • A true or false version, as a list.
  • A photo version, with a picture of the guest of honor alongside the facts.
  • Text customization. Typically space for a list of five or six facts, in addition to the name, occasion, and date.
  • Photo version. Upload a clear photo of the guest of honor.
  • Colors and finish. Most sellers offer a choice of napkin colors, or in the case of the photo version, you can choose the printed background color. Coined or plain edges. Some designs offer real foil printing in shiny or matte, from a minimum of 25, with one imprint color included.
  • Sizes. Cocktail napkins run around 4.75 to 5 inches square folded, which is the size to go for at a drinks reception. Luncheon napkins run 6.5 inches.
  • Quantities. Sold in sets of 50. On the one fact per napkin version, each set of 50 prints the same fact, so four different facts means four sets of 50. Allow three napkins per guest.
  • Material. Three-ply, absorbent, and food contact safe.
  • Proofs. You get a digital proof before anything prints, with two rounds of edits included.
  • Lead times. Production takes 3 to 7 business days after proof approval. Shipping adds 1 to 5 days.

the why

WHY This Idea?

  • Talking point; clever little details and personal touches create talking points, buzz, and atmosphere.
  • Ice breaker; encourages different groups to interact with ready-made conversation-starters.
  • Discovery; allows guests to learn things they might not know about the guest of honor.
  • Guessing game; the true or false version gives guests something to argue over and settle with the guest of honor.
  • Contributory; friends, family, and colleagues can send in facts, so the list can cover different parts of their life.
  • Memorable; guests remember creative, unusual, or unexpected elements.
  • Light-hearted; a warm way to celebrate the guest of honor that shows they don’t take themselves too seriously.
  • Bestseller; an idea that has proved popular with visitors to my site.

the why

Why Your Party Drinks Deserve More Attention

  • Always in hand; guests hold a drink for most of the party, so it’s one of the more visible and easily overlooked opportunities to make an impression.
  • Presentation over complexity; thoughtful presentation and a creative twist on a simple drink is often more memorable than an elaborate cocktail that most guests won’t appreciate.
  • Attention to detail; it’s the clever little details — not the drink itself — that guests photograph, share, and remember.

ADVICE FROM A PRO

Matt’s tip

Matt James professional event planner

“These work best when the facts are specific, anecdotal, or leave guests wanting to know more, e.g. “was once escorted out of a Dolly Parton concert” will create far more speculation and discussion than “has a fear of flying”.

Ask friends, family, and colleagues to send you their best suggestions. That way you’ll end up with a mix covering different parts of their life, and you’ll probably discover some you didn’t know yourself!

If you go for the one fact per napkin version, remember it’s a minimum of 50 napkins per fact. Place three or four orders of 50 each with a different fact, so guests keep discovering new things as the party unfolds.

Do something similar if you opt for the custom photo napkins. Instead of using one photo for the whole order, split it into three or four smaller batches, each using a different photo of the guest of honor at a different stage of life — a baby photo, a school photo, a photo from their twenties, etc. It makes it much more entertaining for guests to see what they used to look like.

Either way, you should probably allow for about 3 napkins per person.

If you need to transfer old printed photos to a digital format, this can be done very inexpensively nowadays ($20-$30 for 100 photos) and it’s a great opportunity to preserve them for years to come. Similarly, old photos that are fading, discolored, or damaged can often be restored at the same time. See links below.
