the how

  • Take inspiration from these charming homemade decorations from Marta Dansie’s in-laws 50th wedding anniversary (see more at Marta Writes)
  • Make a list of ‘Fun Facts’ about the guest of honor
  • Print one fact per sheet of paper, number it, and mount onto card stock
  • Attach to string or ribbon using wooden pegs for a simple, down to earth, rustic look
  • Alternatively, you can buy an editable and printable wedding seating plan card template for around $5 (links below) and just change the text to your chosen facts.

the why

overhead decorations

  • Visibility; overhead decorations remain visible when the room is full of people
  • Intimacy; lowers the ceiling, reduces empty space, and makes large rooms and cavernous venues feel more full, which helps create a buzzy atmosphere
  • Focal points; decorations above bars, food stations, dance floors, or activities can identify their location in large or crowded rooms and encourage mingling by creating destinations for guests to explore

Perimeter / wall decorations

  • Transformative; helps transform a domestic space or empty venue into a party environment
  • Masking; helps hide or distract from existing or incompatible room décor
  • Value; can help dress large areas
  • Atmospheric; perimeter decorations are important early on, before the room fills up, to help create a party atmosphere and ensure it feels like a special occasion
  • Economical; can be used sparingly if majority of decorations are clustered around a main feature wall / display area, such as a dessert table and backdrop
  • Intimacy; helps define the party space and envelope guests to create an intimate atmosphere
  • Interactive; some perimeter / wall décor can be used to entertain guests, such as ‘Fun Facts’ garland banners or ‘Through the Years’ photo garlands

the why

this idea

  • Special occasions should feel special; generic ‘off the shelf’ decorations are lazy and unimaginative
  • Personalized; customized decorations are more special and show you made an effort
  • Funny; quirky, lighthearted, or self-deprecating decorations will make guests smile
  • Conversation-starter; gives guests something to talk about and discuss with one another
  • Discovery; allows guest to discover things they might not know about the guest of honor
  • Entertaining; will keep guests entertained during the party
  • Memorable; guests remember creative, unusual, or unexpected decorations
  • Surprise; a great way to surprise the guest of honor
  • Unusual; a less common party idea to impress guests
  • Inexpensive; a cost-effective party idea that won’t blow your budget

ADVICE FROM A PRO

Matt’s tip

Matt James professional event planner

“In Marta’s example, pictured above, they came up with a fact inspired by each number of the 50 years being celebrated e.g. 11: trips to France, 15: grandchildren, 17: months they dated before they were engaged etc.

Alternatively, to make it a little easier, you could just come up with one fun fact for each year being celebrated, e.g 40 Fun Facts You Might Not Know About The Birthday Boy/Girl.

You can also ask friends, family, and co-workers to come up with some fun facts too. That way, you’ll have a broad mix from different stages or areas of their life (and it will take the pressure off having to think of so many yourself!).

If you want to make these look more stylish and a little less homemade, check out the links below for editable and printable seating plan template cards, which you can pick up for around $5.

There are some tasteful designs with numbered headings, stylish fonts, and convenient layouts so all you have to do is edit the number heading and replace the list of names with the text of the Fun Fact.”
