Use multiple banners with relevant phrases, sayings, lyrics, quotes, or poetry to decorate the space above guests’ heads

the how

  • Take inspiration from these cute homemade banners from Katie Rich’s holiday party (read more at Katie did) that feature lyrics from traditional carols such as ‘Oh Come Let Us Adore Him’
  • She cut out paper letters freehand in all different sizes then attached to twine by folding Scotch tape from the front of each letter, over the twine, and onto the back of the letter before hanging
  • Hang overhead, as Katie did, or on perimeter walls

  • Visibility; overhead decorations remain visible when the room is full of people
  • Intimacy; lowers the ceiling, reduces empty space, and makes large rooms and cavernous venues feel more full, which helps create a buzzy atmosphere
  • Focal points; decorations above bars, food stations, dance floors, or activities can identify their location in large or crowded rooms and encourage mingling by creating destinations for guests to explore

Perimeter / wall decorations

  • Transformative; helps transform a domestic space or empty venue into a party environment
  • Masking; helps hide or distract from existing or incompatible room décor
  • Value; can help dress large areas
  • Atmospheric; perimeter decorations are important early on, before the room fills up, to help create a party atmosphere and ensure it feels like a special occasion
