Custom Guess Who

the idea

Swap the classic cartoon faces for real photos of the guest of honor’s own family and friends, and watch everyone struggle to guess who’s who.

the how

  • Format. Choose a full game (board, box, and up to 24 or so custom cards) or just a set of custom cards designed to swap into an existing Guess Who board.
  • Theme. Choose a theme — family, a friend group, a favorite sports team, even a mash-up of relatives and celebrities — or keep it straightforward with just family and friends.
  • Photos. Most sellers need 24 photos, one per card, each labeled with the name you want printed underneath.
  • Lead time. Around 1 to 2 weeks once your photos are in.
  • Two of everything. Since Guess Who is a head-to-head game, most orders include two identical boards, so both players are guessing from the same set of faces.

the why

WHY THIS IDEA?

  • Recognition factor; every “yes” or “no” answer is about someone you actually know, so working out who’s who becomes the entertainment, not just the reveal at the end.
  • Everyone’s included; from grandparents to the family dog, if they’ve got a face, they can be a card — nobody’s left out.
  • Longevity; a lot of personalized gifts get admired once — this one will get played over and over, at every future game night.
  • Flexibility; buy the board with all family faces now, then a fresh set of cards next year to switch to all friends — no need for a second board.
  • Unusual; not a typical, run-of-the-mill gift — something genuinely out of the ordinary
  • Unique; one of a kind and tailored to them, not something you could pick up anywhere
  • Funny; sure to bring a smile to their face
  • Surprising; an unexpected gift gets a genuine reaction when they open it, compared to a polite smile for something predictable
  • Show-off value; the kind of gift they’ll want to show off to friends and family, not just open and forget

the why

WHY GIFTS SHOULD BE ONE OF THREE THINGS

  • Meaningful and sentimental; a gift that celebrates the person or your relationship with them creates a real emotional connection that people remember.
  • Quirky and unexpected; something unusual, unique, or playful, tied to their interests or sense of humor — the kind that gets a laugh, but is more than a cheap gag gift.
  • Indulgent; a treat, an experience, or a luxury you know they’d love but would never buy for themselves, that they can enjoy guilt-free.

ADVICE FROM A PRO

Matt’s tip

Matt James professional event planner

“Family photos are the obvious choice, but a favorite sports team roster, a TV cast, or a mix of relatives and celebrities dropped in for a laugh work just as well.

Because the whole game is asking questions about someone’s actual face, pick photos where the details that make them recognizable are visible — glasses, a beard, a signature hat — rather than a generic headshot. Those are exactly the features good guessers will be asking about.

Gathering 24 photos on your own is a slog, so ask family members to send in their own instead. It’s a good excuse to get a current photo of everyone at once, and you’ll end up with a much better spread than working from your own camera roll.

Get your photos over to the seller within a day or so of ordering. Most lead times only start counting once everything’s in, so a slow upload is the single biggest thing that pushes your delivery date back.

Once you’ve got a board, a fresh set of cards is cheaper than a whole new game, so you can always reorder with a new group of faces to use as a future gift.
