the idea

the how

  • Tie freshly-filled helium balloons to ribbon or balloon poles
  • Anchor with balloon weights or lanterns
  • Arrange along the path or walkway to the entrance of your party
  • For long paths, stagger the balloons as you alternate each side.
  • For shorter paths, it looks best if you mirror the balloons opposite each other on both sides to create a tunnel effect

the why

Entrance Decorations

  • Functional; identifies party location and directs guests to the entrance
  • Welcoming; a warm welcome subliminally puts guests at ease (versus a bare/cold entrance)
  • First impressions matter; guests make judgments and form opinions quickly
  • Attention to detail; many people overlook the importance of having some entrance decorations to greet guests
  • Anticipation; exterior decorations build anticipation and tease whatโ€™s to come

this idea

  • Dramatic; makes a big and bold first impression to wow guests from the start
  • Inexpensive; a cost-effective party idea that wonโ€™t blow your budget

ADVICE FROM A PRO

Matt’s tip

Matt James professional event planner

“If you plan to use these outside using just ribbon or string, be aware that any wind will cause them to bend, sway, or bob around, so it will be harder to achieve the upright look.

Professionals, such as Balloons by Tommy (Chicago & LA) typically tie them to balloon column poles, as shown in the main photo above. You can pick these up for around $6 each, see button below.

If using ribbon or string, you can reduce the amount of movement by shortening the length, as shown in the photo of orange balloons above, but they will still bend if there’s more than a gentle breeze. You can also compensate for the reduced length by anchoring them to taller lanterns to add extra height.

I would also recommend not inflating the balloons any earlier than a couple of hours before the start of the event, so they have the maximum float potential.”
