Custom Photo Straws

the idea

Enhance the presentation of even the simplest party drinks without messing around with fiddly garnishes, adding these custom photo straws featuring cute, funny, or embarrassing old photos of the guest of honor.

the how

  • Customization. Submit a clear, well-lit, and forward-facing photo of the guest of honor and the seller will remove the background and crop it into a head shot. Side-angle shots make for a messier-looking cutout once it’s printed and trimmed. Choose between designs that add a party hat with their age number or a face-only cutout.
  • Format. Straws come in dozens of solid, striped, and metallic colors, with assorted multi-color packs available from most sellers.
  • Materials. Most are paper, often described as biodegradable or compostable; a smaller number of sellers offer plastic or a bamboo-fiber option. The face topper itself is glossy or matte cardstock, glued onto the straw.
  • Sizing. The face cutout itself runs about 1 to 2 inches tall, mounted on a standard straw around 7.75 inches long.
  • Quantities. Sets run from about 10 or 12 up to 100 or 200, with the price per straw dropping at higher counts. A few sellers cap one photo per set of 12 and charge extra for a second face.
  • Setup. No assembly needed — straws arrive with the topper already attached, ready to drop into a drink.
  • Lead times. Processing typically takes 1 to 5 business days, though a couple of sellers need 10 to 12+ days for a fully custom design — worth checking before you order if your date is close. Standard shipping adds a few more days on top.

the why

WHY This Idea?

  • First impression; the welcome drink is one of the first things guests experience, and a personal touch there sets the tone for the night.
  • Entertaining; lets guests see the guest of honor at different stages of their life that they might never have seen before.
  • Light-hearted; a warm way to celebrate the guest of honor that shows they don’t take themselves too seriously.
  • Talking point; clever little details and personal touches create talking points, buzz, and atmosphere.
  • Photo-worthy; the kind of detail that guests photograph, share and remember.
  • Memorable; guests remember creative, unusual, or unexpected elements.
  • Creative twist; adds a personal or unexpected element to regular party drinks.
  • Versatile; choose from dozens of hat styles — a birthday cone, a cowboy hat, a glittered pom-pom topper — so the same cutout face can suit different party themes or occasions.
  • Easy; a low-effort way to add something special to the drinks without complicated recipes or bartending skills.
  • Inexpensive; a cost-effective idea that won’t blow your budget.

the why

Why Your Party Drinks Deserve More Attention

  • Always in hand; guests hold a drink for most of the party, so it’s one of the more visible and easily overlooked opportunities to make an impression.
  • Presentation over complexity; thoughtful presentation and a creative twist on a simple drink is often more memorable than an elaborate cocktail that most guests won’t appreciate.
  • Attention to detail; it’s the clever little details — not the drink itself — that guests photograph, share, and remember.
  • Budget-smart; spend a little more to make the first drink memorable, then ease into simpler, cheaper pours for the rest of the evening.

ADVICE FROM A PRO

Matt’s tip

Matt James professional event planner

“Don’t use images you’ve screen-grabbed or taken from social media as these have often been compressed to a lower resolution and will print less crisply once they’re shrunk down to a 1.5-inch cutout. Try to source original high-resolution photos.

Most sellers cap each set to one photo, so order several smaller sets, each using a different photo of the guest of honor at a different stage of life — a baby photo, a school photo, a photo from their twenties — which will be much more entertaining for guests.

If your budget’s tight, save these just for the welcome drink on arrival to make a big first impression.

If you need to transfer old printed photos to a digital format, this can be done very inexpensively nowadays ($20-$30 for 100 photos) and it’s a great opportunity to preserve them for years to come. Similarly, old photos that are fading, discolored, or damaged can often be restored at the same time. See links below.”
