Wishing Ball

the idea

Encourage the guest of honor to create a weekly wish or message of gratitude to capture in a hand-blown glass wishing ball that serves as a reminder of their magic.

the how

  • Format. A hand-blown glass ball on a small footed base, about 4 inches tall and 3.5 inches in diameter, with a tiny opening near the base for tucking in wishes.
  • Personalization. Choose from the original pale blue or twelve other colors, each tied to a different birth month’s birthstone.
  • How it works. Comes with 52 small slips of paper, one for each week of the year. Roll a wish, hope, or gratitude up and tuck it into the opening near the base, where it becomes a permanent part of the display.

the why

WHY This Idea?

  • Mindfulness; a rare gift that asks for a moment of real reflection each week.
  • Weekly ritual; turns a fleeting hope or thank-you into a two-minute habit that’s easy for them to actually keep up, one slip at a time, all year.
  • Growing keepsake; out on display, it visibly fills up week by week, to create a meaningful keepsake.
  • Positivity; inspires them to be hopeful, feel grateful, and put their dreams into words.
  • Thoughtful; picking their birthstone color makes it feel chosen specifically for them.
  • Connection; a physical reminder of your relationship with them, so they think of you every time they use it.
  • Conversation piece; a unique piece of home décor that anyone who visits will ask about.

the why

Why Gifts Should Be One of Three Things

  • Meaningful and sentimental; a gift that celebrates the person or your relationship with them creates a real emotional connection that people remember.
  • Quirky and unexpected; something unusual, unique, or playful, tied to their interests or sense of humor — the kind that gets a laugh, but is more than a cheap gag gift.
  • Indulgent; a treat, an experience, or a luxury you know they’d love but would never buy for themselves, that they can enjoy guilt-free.

ADVICE FROM A PRO

Matt’s tip

Matt James professional event planner

“I’ve noticed some people have been disappointed that once the scrolls are inserted into the ball, they can’t be removed, but I think that kind of misses the point of making a wish.

The artist who created the wishing balls, Jill Henrietta Davis, says herself ‘When you blow out your candles, you don’t tell the wish you made, otherwise it won’t come true. But more importantly, memories are always more beautiful than photographs, and the same is true of wishes. When you look at the little slips of paper accumulating in your wishing ball, I want you to think about the big picture those messages convey. Rereading the notes would be like looking backwards, or trying to step in the same river twice.’

As you’re giving this as a gift, I quite like the idea of adding your own wish for that person to the ball before you hand it over. There’s something rather romantic about knowing someone has wished something positive for you, but you don’t know what it is.

Similarly, you could also consider passing it around the party and asking each guest to add one wish before it’s given, turning it into an even more meaningful gift for the guest of honor to treasure.
