Tasting Plates

the idea

Make simple snacks, like quiche, tartlets, sliced wraps, or mac & cheese bites, look more stylish by serving on disposable mini tasting plates.

the how

  • Use for:
  • Sushi rolls or nigiri
  • Sliced wraps
  • Quiche / tartlets
  • Frittata
  • Samosas
  • Pinwheels / rolls
  • Mini pies
  • Stuffed mushrooms
  • Meatballs
  • Arancini / croquettes
  • Tapas
  • Charcuterie or cheese slices
  • Smoked salmon or gravlax with crackers
  • Bruschetta or crostini
  • Deviled eggs
  • Format. Rigid, food-grade clear plastic in a mini square design; also available in white, gold, silver, or black, and some sets are sold with matching mini forks in gold, silver, black, or clear.
  • Capacity. Typically around 4 inches square — check the exact dimensions before ordering, as you don’t really want them any smaller.
  • Set size. Packs run from 12 up to 200, or as sets of 10 to 100 with matching mini forks.
  • Care. Intended as disposable, though the sturdy hard plastic can sometimes be hand-washed and reused.

the why

WHY This Idea?

  • Elevated; a low-effort way to make simple, home-made, or store-bought foods look and feel more special
  • Snack size; perfect for serving smaller bites and nibbles for guests to graze on during a cocktail hour or drinks reception
  • Portion Size; controls serving sizes to help with budgeting, reduce over-consumption, and avoid running short
  • Uniformity; ensures any homemade dishes made by friends and family don’t look homemade
  • Less Congestion; serving individual portions guests can pick up reduces lines and congestion at the buffet table

the why

Why You Need Small Plates / Bites

  • Visual impact; individual portions lend a stylish, modern, and professionally-catered look to your spread
  • Batch cooking; dishes can be made in big batches in advance then portioned at the last minute
  • Work-load; friends and family can contribute dishes which can then be divided into appetizer cups, takeout boxes, mason jars, or martini glasses to make them look more stylish
  • Less waste; guests tend to take one portion instead of loading up their plate so there’s far less waste
  • Clear up; high-quality disposables can be recycled or thrown away after the event to reduce clearing and cleaning time

ADVICE FROM A PRO

Matt’s tip

Matt James professional event planner

“This is just a really easy way to make even the most basic ‘filler’ items; sliced wraps, quiche, deviled eggs, mac & cheese bites etc. look way more special than they are.

Portioning onto mini tasting plates lends a clean, modern, neat, and stylish look when you arrange them in rows on a buffet table. For more about the three simple rules for layout; groups, rows, and levels, see my Dessert Table Layout page because the principles are the same for buffet tables.

Add an extra twist by serving a shot of sauce, dressing, or gravy in individual pipettes (see my other post on Food Pipettes here).

To reduce lines at the buffet table, make these grab-and-go by serving with a small disposable fork resting on the plate or stuck into the food.

You could also make these more special by using personalized disposable spoons / forks printed with your event name (see links below).

Note that these disposable mini plates come in different sizes, so check you’re buying the right size for whatever you plan to serve. Anything smaller than 4” square might result in too small a portion.

While these look great arranged in rows and grids, too many can make your buffet table look flat, so don’t forget to add height by arranging some on treat stands and risers (see links below).

Though intended to be disposable, the hard plastic is sturdy enough that some people hand-wash and reuse them for future events.
