Party Food Served on Tasting Forks

the idea

Make small bites feel more special or control the portion size for more expensive ingredients by presenting them upright on individual tasting forks.

the how

  • Use for:
  • Cubed cheese with walnuts and dried cranberries
  • Chilled spaghetti, mozzarella, and basil salad bites
  • Prosciutto-wrapped melon with basil and a balsamic drizzle
  • Marinated shrimp
  • Tuna ceviche bites
  • Smoked salmon and cucumber
  • Chilled noodle salad
  • Sushi
  • Stacked salad bites, e.g. B.L.T, Chicken Caesar
  • Topped potato wedges
  • Format. Glossy metal-look plastic in gold or silver, or natural wood.
  • Size. Full-size forks run around 8 inches for a more premium, decorative look. Wooden versions are around 6 inches.
  • Set size. Comes in packs of 24 up to 50.

the why

WHY This Idea?

  • Elevated; a low-effort way to make simple, home-made, or store-bought foods look and feel more special
  • Snack Size; perfect for serving smaller snacks for guests to graze on during a cocktail party
  • Portion Size; helps control portion size of more expensive ingredients
  • Atmosphere; guests can nibble while chatting and mingling, which helps keep the energy up
  • Layout; helps achieve the three simple rules for layout; groups, rows, and levels (see Matt’s Tip section below)
  • Adds Height; varying degrees of height are essential to a well-designed buffet table
  • Creative; adds a creative twist to simple everyday foods, such as cheese, potato wedges, and salads
  • Inexpensive; a cost-effective party idea that won’t blow your budget
  • Value; low cost idea that creates a big impression
  • Unusual; a less common way to present party food to impress guests
  • Bestseller; an idea that’s proved popular with many of my site’s visitors

the why

Why You Need Small Plates / Bites

  • Visual impact; individual portions lend a stylish, modern, and professionally-catered look to your spread
  • Batch cooking; dishes can be made in big batches in advance then portioned at the last minute
  • Work-load; friends and family can contribute dishes which can then be divided into appetizer cups, takeout boxes, mason jars, or martini glasses to make them look more stylish
  • Less waste; guests tend to take one portion instead of loading up their plate so there’s far less waste
  • Clear up; high-quality disposables can be recycled or thrown away after the event to reduce clearing and cleaning time

ADVICE FROM A PRO

Matt’s tip

Matt James professional event planner

“Check out my Pinterest board ‘Party Food: Serve on Forks’ for more menu ideas, both sweet and savory. And if you’re after dessert inspiration specifically, take a look at my Tasting Forks post, which shows how to present sweet treats and desserts in the same way.

I think these look best when you present them with the fork standing up and the food at the top; it just looks more unusual.

To achieve this, you’ll need to make a base to support the weight.

The simplest option is to pick up an inexpensive shadow box frame for photographs. Remove the back and glass, then lie flat on the table.

Cut a block of floral foam to the same length and width with a slightly lower height, so that it will fit inside the frame and sit just beneath the surface.

Cover the foam with decorative gift wrap and cut slits where you want to position the forks (a single row or grid looks best). Place the floral foam inside the frame and press the forks into the slits.

Alternatively, you could wrap the foam block with plain paper then, once inside the box frame, scatter the top surface with crafts stones or glass beads for a more decorative finish.

Although it’s fine to use plastic tasting forks, I’d recommend using premium disposables (see links below), as these are typically used for weddings and events and, as such, have a more decorative or ornate look. Regular clear, white, or black plastic forks just look like cheap takeaway cutlery.

Alternatively, you can pick up either wood or plastic personalized tasting forks (link below) pretty cheaply, printed with your event name and date (or any text you choose, e.g ‘Bite Me’).
