Book Art & Sculptures

the idea

Turn a much-loved or long-forgotten book into a piece of art: sculpted into a glowing scene, folded into their name, or reshaped into flowers that never wilt.

the how

  • Format. Choose from:
  • illuminated sculptures,
  • cut paper flowers,
  • in-book origami florals,
  • and folded name or word art.
  • Book sculptures. Elaborate scenes, often a house, tree, or forest, are cut, folded, and shaped directly out of a book’s own pages, with a built-in LED light so it glows from within. These are made to order and can take several weeks.
  • Book flowers. A dozen or so paper roses, individually cut and shaped from book pages onto wire stems, then gathered into a bouquet.
  • Book art. Origami-folded flowers arranged so they appear to bloom directly out of an open book’s pages, each with a small bead at its centre.
  • Custom folded book art. Individual pages are folded, not cut, so a name, word, or short phrase appears in raised 3D lettering when the book stands open.

the why

WHY This Idea?

  • Second life; books that would otherwise sit unread, or head to a charity shop, are turned into art and home décor to be admired.
  • Handmade; every piece is cut, folded, or shaped by hand, so the finished piece is genuinely one of a kind.
  • Book lovers; for someone who loves reading, this speaks to that in a way most other gifts don’t.
  • Conversation piece; a unique piece of art that anyone who visits will ask about.
  • Every budget; from a bouquet of paper roses to a full illuminated sculpture, there’s an option that works for a small gesture and one that fits a milestone.
  • Unusual; not a typical, run-of-the-mill gift — something genuinely out of the ordinary.
  • Show-off value; the kind of gift they’ll want to show off to friends and family, not just open and forget.
  • A Treat; the type of indulgence they probably wouldn’t buy for themselves.
  • Lasting; something they’ll keep and treasure for years.

the why

Why Gifts Should Be One of Three Things

  • Meaningful and sentimental; a gift that celebrates the person or your relationship with them creates a real emotional connection that people remember.
  • Quirky and unexpected; something unusual, unique, or playful, tied to their interests or sense of humor — the kind that gets a laugh, but is more than a cheap gag gift.
  • Indulgent; a treat, an experience, or a luxury you know they’d love but would never buy for themselves, that they can enjoy guilt-free.

ADVICE FROM A PRO

Matt’s tip

Matt James professional event planner

“I know some people’s first reaction to cutting up a book is one of discomfort, but the makers themselves describe their materials as recycled or repurposed books, so while they might no longer be fit for purpose to read, there’s something quite satisfying in giving them a second life as a work of art or home décor, one where they’re likely to get far more attention than they ever did sitting unread on a shelf.

Keep in mind the lead times for the different pieces vary enormously by type. The sculptures are intricate made-to-order pieces, so could take from 4 to 8 weeks for production and shipping. Whereas the flower arrangements and personalized name pieces are often ready to ship within about a week.
