Takeout Boxes

the idea

Allow guests to eat more substantial portions standing up while chatting and mingling by serving noodles, pasta, or salads in individual Chinese-style takeout boxes with chopsticks or wooden forks.

the how

  • Style. Choose from plain white or kraft, or the traditional red pagoda print. A few sellers also offer black, newspaper-print, or pink versions.
  • Size. Ranges from bite-size mini boxes around 2.5 inches up to a fuller 16oz portion.
  • Utensils. Wooden chopsticks or forks come included with the set; pick your choice at checkout.
  • Set size. Comes in sets of 25, 50, or 100.
  • Personalization. A few sellers will allow for custom printing onto the box, on one or both sides, in a color of your choice.
  • Process. Plain boxes ship ready to use, no ordering wait beyond standard shipping. For personalized or custom-printed versions, submit your wording or design brief at checkout; expect a digital proof to approve before anything goes to print.
  • Lead time. Plain sets typically arrive within a week or two. Personalized or fully custom versions take longer: usually a proof within 24 to 48 hours, then production only starts once you’ve approved it.

the why

WHY This Idea?

  • Substantial portions. Allows you to serve larger, more substantial, and filling portions without guests needing to sit down to eat.
  • Elevated. A low-effort way to make simple pasta or noodle salads feel more special.
  • Less congestion. Pre-portioned into individual boxes, guests can grab one quickly instead of queuing at the buffet while the person in front slowly loads up their plate.
  • Atmosphere. Guests can eat while chatting and mingling which helps keep the energy up.
  • Quantities. Easier to visualize quantity needed per person compared to planning large bowls on a buffet table.
  • Less mess. Individual boxes mean no spills at the buffet table, no half-empty serving bowls, and no one mixing up serving spoons.
  • Personalized. Customizing boxes with a name, age, occasion, date, or monogram is an easy way to make them look more elegant.

the why

Why You Need Small Plates / Bites

  • Visual impact. Individual portions lend a stylish, modern, and professionally-catered look to your spread.
  • Reinvented. Makes simple, home-made, or store-bought foods look and feel more special.
  • Portion control. Easier to regulate portion size and reduce over-consumption of expensive items.
  • Batch cooking. Dishes can be made in big batches in advance then portioned at the last minute.
  • Work-load. Friends and family can contribute dishes which can then be divided into appetizer cups, takeout boxes, mason jars, or martini glasses to make them look more stylish.
  • Less waste. Guests tend to take one portion instead of loading up their plate so there’s far less waste.
  • Clear up. Disposable boxes can be thrown straight into the trash to reduce clearing and cleaning time.

ADVICE FROM A PRO

Matt’s tip

Matt James professional event planner

“This is a trick I’ve seen at many professional events. A row of takeout boxes filled with chilled noodles or pasta salads just looks so much more stylish than if the same food was piled into big serving bowls on a buffet. It’s cleaner, neater, and makes basic dishes feel more special.

These work best lined up en masse along the buffet table or passed around on trays, but remember to leave the tops open with the chopsticks or forks sticking out, so guests know what dish is inside. You don’t want guests fumbling around to open them and then putting them back if they don’t want what’s inside.

If you’re going the personalized route, rather than just printing the name, date, and occasion, I always think it’s better to inject a little personality where possible — it’s more entertaining for guests. So, you might use a food-related phrase, such as “Stuff Your Face,” “Eat to the Beat,” or “Eat, Dance, Repeat.” For a milestone birthday, a line like “Not Dead Yet” or “Too Late to Die Young” gets more of a reaction than “Sarah’s 40th”. Check out my full list of creative occasion phrases here for more ideas.
