Photo Drinks Toppers

the idea

Bring a smile to guests’ faces by customizing their welcome drink with cute, funny, or embarrassing old photos of the guest of honor.

the how

  • Customization. Submit a clear, close-up photo when you order, plus a name, age, date, or short line of text if you want, in a choice of font and color.
  • Size. Match the topper to the glass: 1.5 inches for champagne or shot glasses, 2 inches for wine, highball, or rocks glasses, 2.5 inches for martini glasses (the most popular choice), 3 inches for margarita or coupe glasses.
  • Process. Toppers are printed with edible ink on wafer paper, a thin, tasteless edible sheet made mostly from potato starch. They arrive precut into circles, ready to use straight from the pack.
  • Setup. Add the topper just before the drink is served. These last longer on a foamy or fuller-bodied drink compared to a thin drink like water or soda.
  • Lead times. Production takes 3 business days. Standard shipping adds 2 to 5 days, or 1 to 3 days with a priority upgrade. Order at least a week out.
  • Dietary. Some sellers offer vegan, gluten-free, or dairy-free versions.

the why

WHY This Idea?

  • First impression; the welcome drink is one of the first things guests experience, and a personal touch there sets the tone for the night
  • Easy; a low-effort way to add something special to the drinks without complicated recipes or bartending skills
  • Entertaining; lets guests see the guest of honor at different stages of their life that they might never have seen before
  • Photo-worthy; exactly the kind of detail guests photograph before they’ve even taken a sip
  • Talking point; gives guests something to discuss and share, creating buzz and atmosphere
  • Versatile; works on cocktails, wine, soda, and non-alcoholic drinks alike
  • Inexpensive; a cost-effective idea that won’t blow your budget

the why

Why Your Party Drinks Deserve More Attention

  • Ever-present; guests hold a drink for most of the party, so it’s one of the more visible and easily overlooked opportunities to add a personal touch
  • Presentation over complexity; thoughtful presentation — a nice glass, a garnish, a simple styling touch — is often more memorable than an elaborate cocktail most guests won’t appreciate
  • Attention to detail; it’s the clever little details — not the drink itself — that guests photograph, share, and remember
  • Budget-smart; it’s worth spending a little more to make the first drink memorable, then ease into simpler, cheaper pours for the rest of the evening

ADVICE FROM A PRO

Matt’s tip

Matt James professional event planner

“These work best with a cute, funny, or slightly embarrassing photo from years ago: an awkward school photo, a bad haircut, an outfit that hasn’t aged well. It’s more entertaining for guests — and will get more of a reaction than a standard headshot.

Because these are quite small, use a close-up face photo rather than a wide or full-body shot — skip anything pulled from a group text or an old screenshot, where the guest of honor’s face ends up too small to read once it’s printed on a two-inch disc.

Instead of just naming the occasion, use the text option to add something with more character: “Not Just a Pretty Face” for a graduation, “The Man, The Myth, The Legend” for a milestone birthday, or “20 Years. No Notes.” for an anniversary. Check out my full list of creative occasion phrases here for more ideas.

I’d use these for the welcome drink to make a strong first impression — they don’t last the whole night, so the timing works in your favor there. Especially with a cute or embarrassing photo, it sets a lighthearted, celebratory tone from the moment guests arrive.

If you’re ordering a few dozen, split it into two or three smaller batches using different photos of the guest of honor at different stages of their life: as a baby, at school, at graduation, on their wedding day. It makes it more interesting for guests than the same photo repeated on every glass.

If you need to transfer old printed photos to a digital format, this can be done very inexpensively nowadays ($20-$30 for 100 photos) and it’s a great opportunity to preserve them for years to come. Similarly, old photos that are fading, discolored, or damaged can often be restored at the same time. See links below.”
