Custom Photo Napkins

the idea

Give guests something to smile at over drinks by printing cocktail napkins with a cute, funny, or embarrassing old photo of the guest of honor.

the how

  • Format. Three designs to choose from:
  • a single-photo napkin,
  • a two-photo “Then & Now” style collage pairing an old photo from years ago with a current one,
  • or a three-photo “Through The Years” style collage spanning different life stages.
  • Customization. Some designs require you to upload your photo directly and customize the text with a self-service design tool, while others you just submit to the seller who will make the necessary changes and send a digital proof before printing.
  • Colors and finish. Choices range from white or ecru up to a dozen ink colors and striped background designs, depending on the seller. Coined or plain edges.
  • Sizes. Cocktail napkins run about 4.75 to 4.8 inches square folded — the size for a drinks reception. Luncheon napkins run 6.5 inches, better suited to a buffet or dessert table.
  • Quantities. Sold in sets of 50. Allow three napkins per guest.
  • Material. Three-ply paper, food contact safe.
  • Proofs. Sellers who apply the photo by hand typically send a digital proof before printing; self-service design tools show a live preview instead.

the why

WHY This Idea?

  • First impression; the welcome drink is one of the first things guests experience, and a personal touch there sets the tone for the night.
  • Entertaining; lets guests see the guest of honor at different stages of their life that they might never have seen before.
  • Light-hearted; a warm way to celebrate the guest of honor that shows they don’t take themselves too seriously.
  • Talking point; clever little details and personal touches create talking points, buzz, and atmosphere.
  • Photo-worthy; the kind of detail that guests photograph, share and remember.
  • Memorable; guests remember creative, unusual, or unexpected elements.
  • Creative twist; adds a personal or unexpected element to everyday drinks.

the why

Why Your Party Drinks Deserve More Attention

  • Always in hand; guests hold a drink for most of the party, so it’s one of the more visible and easily overlooked opportunities to make an impression.
  • Presentation over complexity; thoughtful presentation and a creative twist on a simple drink is often more memorable than an elaborate cocktail that most guests won’t appreciate.
  • Attention to detail; it’s the clever little details — not the drink itself — that guests photograph, share, and remember.
  • Budget-smart; spend a little more to make the first drink memorable, then ease into simpler, cheaper pours for the rest of the evening.

ADVICE FROM A PRO

Matt’s tip

Matt James professional event planner

“These work best with a cute, funny, or slightly embarrassing photo from years ago: an awkward school photo, a bad haircut, an outfit that hasn’t aged well.

Instead of using one photo for the whole order, split it into three or four smaller batches, each using a different photo of the guest of honor at a different stage of life — a baby photo, a school photo, a photo from their twenties, etc. It makes it much more entertaining for guests.

Alternatively, you can achieve a similar effect by opting for the two-photo “Then & Now” style design or the three-photo “Through The Years” option.

Don’t rely only on your own photo collection. Ask friends and family to send over a few photos of the guest of honor from different points in their life — you’ll have more to choose from for the two- or three-photo versions, and might turn up a photo the guest of honor has forgotten about or never even seen.

If you need to transfer old printed photos to a digital format, this can be done very inexpensively nowadays ($20-$30 for 100 photos) and it’s a great opportunity to preserve them for years to come. Similarly, old photos that are fading, discolored, or damaged can often be restored at the same time. See links below.”
