Custom Wine Labels

the idea

Bring some personality to the bar by customizing wine bottles with a witty ready-made line or a fully custom design built around the guest of honor.

the how

  • Customization. Choose from:
  • a ready-made phrase, e.g. “Forty, the Ultimate F Word” or “Pairs Well with Graduating”;
  • a paragraph about the guest of honor or their age written like a dictionary definition;
  • your choice of custom text;
  • or a fully customized design in the style of a traditional wine label (main image above).
  • Pick a font and color; most sellers allow up to around 250 characters, with a few offering more room for a full paragraph.
  • Format. Order ready-to-stick labels, a digital template you edit and print yourself, or a fully custom design the seller creates from your brief.
  • Sizing. Standard wine labels run roughly 4″ x 5″, with smaller sizes for champagne, mini, and shooter bottles. Exact sizing varies a little by seller.
  • Quantities. Order enough to cover the whole bar. Most sellers offer bundles from a couple of labels up to two dozen or more, with the per-label price dropping at higher counts.
  • Materials. Waterproof, smudge-proof vinyl or sticker paper that can go straight into an ice bucket or cooler.
  • Setup. Peel and stick onto a clean, dry bottle. Most sit right over the existing label; some sellers recommend stripping it first for the cleanest finish.
  • Lead times. Processing takes 1 to 3 business days. Standard shipping adds a few more days, with faster paid options available.

the why

WHY This Idea?

  • First impression; a row of bottles that all carry the same custom graphic or text makes a striking visual when guests walk in — it brands the occasion and gives it a professional feel.
  • Simpler to produce; unlike Photo Wine Labels, there’s no need to locate old photos of the guest of honor, just choose your wording.
  • Adaptable tone; you can use the labels to lend your bar a classic, stylish look with just a name, date, or occasion design, or to add some personality and humor with occasion-specific phrases.
  • One of a kind; skip the templates entirely and have the whole label, even the brand and logo, invented from scratch around the guest of honor (see image 3).
  • Talking point; clever little details and personal touches create talking points, buzz, and atmosphere.
  • Easy; a low-effort way to add something special to the drinks presentation.
  • Inexpensive; a cost-effective idea that won’t blow your budget.

the why

Why Your Party Drinks Deserve More Attention

  • Focal point; the bar is one of the first things guests notice and one of the few spots they keep coming back to throughout the night, so a personal touch there gets seen again and again.
  • Presentation over complexity; thoughtful presentation and a creative twist on a simple drink is often more memorable than an elaborate cocktail most guests won’t appreciate.
  • Attention to detail; it’s the clever little details — not the drink itself — that guests photograph, share, and remember.
  • Budget-smart; it’s worth investing a little more to make the bar area and first drink memorable, then you can ease into cheaper pours and regular bottles later when guests are less likely to notice small details.

ADVICE FROM A PRO

Matt’s tip

Matt James professional event planner

“Custom labels make a bigger impression when the bottles are arranged en masse on the bar top, so try not to dilute the look by mixing them in with regular wine bottles.

While a simple stylish design — such as the Twenty One design in image 1 — is often enough to elevate the look of the bar, I actually think these work best when you make them as personal as possible. For example, each bottle could be printed with a ‘Fun Fact You Might Not Know About (name)’ or a short list of ‘Things We Love About (name)’, both of which will entertain guests and create talking points, buzz, and atmosphere.

Alternatively, opt for a creative, occasion-specific phrase to add a touch of humor, such as ‘Too Late to Die Young’ or ‘Not Today Satan’ for a milestone birthday, or ‘Congrats Now Get a Job’ or ‘Not Just a Pretty Face’ for a graduation. Check out my full list of creative occasion phrases here for more ideas.

There’s also the option to create a fully customized design in the style of a traditional wine label, such as the fictional ‘Bald Hill Vineyards’ label (see main image above) made for a 60th birthday that poked fun at the guest of honor’s balding, complete with tasting notes that reflected his personality traits; ‘smooth, dry, and delightfully opinionated — best enjoyed with good friends and zero hair drama.’ To create something like this, click the Custom Label Design button below.”
