ADVICE FROM A PRO
Matt’s tip

“This is a trick I’ve seen at many professional events. A row of takeout boxes filled with chilled noodles or pasta salads just looks so much more stylish than if the same food was piled into big serving bowls on a buffet. It’s cleaner, neater, and makes basic dishes feel more special.
These work best lined up en masse along the buffet table or passed around on trays, but remember to leave the tops open with the chopsticks or forks sticking out, so guests know what dish is inside. You don’t want guests fumbling around to open them and then putting them back if they don’t want what’s inside.
If you’re going the personalized route, rather than just printing the name, date, and occasion, I always think it’s better to inject a little personality where possible — it’s more entertaining for guests. So, you might use a food-related phrase, such as “Stuff Your Face,” “Eat to the Beat,” or “Eat, Dance, Repeat.” For a milestone birthday, a line like “Not Dead Yet” or “Too Late to Die Young” gets more of a reaction than “Sarah’s 40th”. Check out my full list of creative occasion phrases here for more ideas.
