Custom Reel Viewer

the idea

Surprise the guest of honor with a walk down memory lane by asking friends and family for photos of their favorite memory of them to collect together in a custom reel viewer.

the how

  • Photos. Each reel holds 7 photos, so I’d suggest ordering more than one — different reels can span different periods of their life so that each one tells its own part of their story.
  • Additional reels. Most sellers offer the reels without the viewer too, so you can continue to add to their story to celebrate future special occasions.
  • Color / finish. Choose from red, black, white, or blue plastic, or a natural wood finish.
  • Personalization. Some sellers will also let you add a name, date, or short message to the center slot instead of an 8th photo — in case you want to mark it for a specific occasion.
  • Lead time. Processing takes 1 to 7 business days once your photos are in. Shipping is extra and varies by seller and destination — typically 1 to 3 weeks total.
  • Collector’s case. If this feels like something you’ll come back to for future birthdays or anniversaries, a few sellers offer a wooden case that holds up to 10 reels — handy for building a growing collection.

the why

WHY This Idea?

  • Thoughtful; shows that real thought has gone into creating something just for them.
  • Nostalgic; a walk down memory lane with friends and family is a wonderful way to mark a special occasion.
  • Memorable; thoughtful ideas are the ones people remember and treasure.
  • Feel good; makes the guest of honor feel loved, appreciated, and good about themselves.
  • Keepsake; something they’ll keep and revisit.
  • Emotional; people remember how a gift made them feel, not what it cost.
  • Connection; a physical reminder of your relationship with them, so they think of you every time they use it.
  • Tells a story; turns a shared history into something they can visually reminisce over.

the why

Why Gifts Should Be One of Three Things

  • Meaningful and sentimental; a gift that celebrates the person or your relationship with them creates a real emotional connection that people remember.
  • Quirky and unexpected; something unusual, unique, or playful, tied to their interests or sense of humor, the kind that gets a laugh, but is more than a cheap gag gift.
  • Indulgent; a treat, an experience, or a luxury you know they’d love but would never buy for themselves, that they can enjoy guilt-free.

ADVICE FROM A PRO

Matt’s tip

Matt James professional event planner

“Because you click through these one at a time, in order, it’s worth thinking about the sequence as much as the individual photos. I’d put together a rough story arc — childhood photos through college years in one reel, for example, then graduation, marriage, and children in another — depending on what story you want to tell.

For a milestone birthday, anniversary, or retirement tribute, this is also a nice one to crowdsource. Ask a handful of close family or friends to each send over their own favorite photo of the guest of honor, rather than relying only on your own collection — that way you might be able to surprise them with ones they might have forgotten or never even seen before.

If you need to transfer old printed photos to a digital format, this can be done very inexpensively nowadays ($20-$30 for 100 photos) and it’s a great opportunity to preserve them for years to come. Similarly, old photos that are fading, discolored, or damaged can often be restored at the same time. See links below.

Note that most sellers ask you to label each photo by number when you send them over, including which one’s meant for the center slot. It only takes a minute, but it’s worth double-checking before you hit send — especially if you’re telling a life-story chronologically.

Finally, this has the potential to be quite emotional for the guest of honor, so don’t just give it to them when you arrive. Turn it into a moment at the event, after everyone has been there for a while and eaten, so that the whole group can share in the experience.
