“Pick a photo where their personality shows as much as their face: a genuine laugh, a signature smirk, a raised eyebrow, not a neutral, posed headshot. Puppet makers work an exaggerated expression into the finished piece, so the more character you give them to work with, the more the puppet actually looks like them, not just resembles them.

The same goes for what they’re wearing. A signature look, like a band tee, a work uniform, or their go-to hobby gear, does more for the resemblance than a plain, neutral outfit will.

Note that the fun here comes from affectionate exaggeration, not an actual dig, so lean into something they’re known for or proud of, like their hobby, their signature style, or their sense of humor, rather than something they’re self-conscious about. Get that balance right and it reads as a loving joke.

Because it’s an actual puppet, not just a display piece, you can have some fun with the reveal too. Rather than just give it to them to unwrap, bring it out and perform a quick line or two in their voice when you hand it over.
