the how

  • Format. Comes as a flat printed card, with the personalized photo design on the front and party details on the back.
  • Design. Choose from:
  • a single throwback photo inside the number zero,
  • a ‘then-and-now’ pairing of an old photo next to a recent one inside the letters O of Look,
  • or a ‘through the years’ style three-photo collage.
  • Personalization. Use the online customization tool to upload photos and edit the wording — name, age or occasion, and party details — and preview exactly how it’ll look before you order.
  • Sizes. 5” x 7” is most popular but 4.5” x 6.25” also available.
  • Paper & finish. Choose from several paper finishes (matte, linen, pearlescent, and more), a corner style (squared, rounded, arch, and others), and standard or HD printing.
  • Envelopes. Available with or without plain white envelopes and the option to add address printing for free.
  • Lead times. Standard shipping runs roughly a week to ten days, with faster expedited options available at checkout for an extra cost.

the why

WHY This Idea?

  • Celebrates the person; not just the occasion
  • Flexible; options available for 1, 2, or 3 photos of the guest of honor if you don’t have easy access to old photos
  • Entertaining; lets guests see the guest of honor ‘back in the day’ in a way they’ve probably never seen before
  • Light-hearted; a warm way to celebrate the guest of honor that shows they don’t take themselves too seriously
  • Funny; make guests laugh by including awkward or embarrassing old photos celebrating bad haircuts or crimes of fashion
  • Nostalgic; a walk down memory lane with friends and family is a wonderful way to mark a milestone birthday or special occasion

the why

Why Your Invitations Need to Be Personal, Creative, or Unusual

  • Signals effort; if you’re expecting guests to give up an evening, arrange a babysitter, buy a gift, and travel across town to celebrate with you — your invitation needs to say ‘this is a special occasion’.
  • Strong first impression; if the invitation isn’t exciting, people assume the event won’t be — so it needs to stand out, grab their attention, and pique their curiosity.
  • Excites; generic or clichéd invitations — glitter and cocktails for women, whiskey and beer for men — are unoriginal, uninspiring, and impersonal. These aren’t.
  • Sets the tone; it’s guests’ first insight into what type of party it will be, so it needs to give them a sense of the theme, style, or tone of the event.
  • Encourages RSVPs; invitations sell the event, so they need to excite and inspire people enough that they actually want to attend — rather than just come because they feel obliged to.
  • Talking point; creative twists, personal touches, and clever little details make a party memorable.

ADVICE FROM A PRO

Matt’s tip

Matt James professional event planner

“If you’ve got access to old photos of the guest of honor at different ages, I’d recommend choosing the three-photo ‘through the years’ style design – it just makes it more entertaining for guests.

Regardless of which design you choose, don’t shy away from using a properly awkward photo either — an old school photo or one with a bad haircut — to make guests laugh.

If you need to transfer old printed photos to a digital format, this can be done very inexpensively nowadays ($20-$30 for 100 photos) and it’s a great opportunity to preserve them for years to come. Similarly, old photos that are fading, discolored, or damaged can often be restored at the same time. See links below.

These invitations come with the added bonus of free envelope addressing. Just upload your guests’ names and addresses and they’ll print them onto the envelopes for you at no extra cost.
