the how

  • Format. Comes as a flat printed card — a photo collage on the front, with the party details on the back.
  • Photos. Upload eight photos of the guest of honor and position them in chronological order to fill the grid.
  • Personalization. Use the online customization tool to edit the wording in the center square and see exactly how it will look before you order.
  • Sizes. This grid design is best suited to the 5.25” x 5.25” square size.
  • Paper & finish. Choose from several paper finishes (matte, linen, pearlescent, and more), a corner style (squared, rounded, or circular), and standard or HD printing. Envelopes are included but can be left out.
  • Quantities. Minimum pack size is 10 or in multiples of 25 from 25–1,000.
  • Lead times. Approx. 10 days with standard shipping, but several expedited shipping options are available.

the why

WHY This Idea?

  • Celebrates the person; not just the occasion
  • Entertaining; lets guests see the guest of honor at different stages of their life that they might never have seen before
  • Funny; make guests laugh by including some awkward or embarrassing old photos celebrating bad haircuts and crimes of fashion
  • Light-hearted; a warm way to celebrate the guest of honor that shows they don’t take themselves too seriously
  • Nostalgic; a walk down memory lane with friends and family is a wonderful way to mark a milestone birthday or special occasion

the why

Why Your Invitations Need to Be Personal, Creative, or Unusual

  • Signals effort; if you’re expecting guests to give up an evening, arrange a babysitter, buy a gift, and travel across town to celebrate with you — your invitation needs to say ‘this is a special occasion’.
  • Strong first impression; if the invitation isn’t exciting, people assume the event won’t be — so it needs to stand out, grab their attention, and pique their curiosity.
  • Excites; generic or clichéd invitations — glitter and cocktails for women, whiskey and beer for men — are unoriginal, uninspiring, and impersonal. These aren’t.
  • Sets the tone; it’s guests’ first insight into what type of party it will be, so it needs to give them a sense of the theme, style, or tone of the event.
  • Encourages RSVPs; invitations sell the event, so they need to excite and inspire people enough that they actually want to attend — rather than just come because they feel obliged to.
  • Talking point; creative twists, personal touches, and clever little details make a party memorable.

ADVICE FROM A PRO

Matt’s tip

Matt James professional event planner

“These ‘through the years’ style invitations work best when you include photos of the guest of honor from all different life stages; as a baby, kid, teenager, college student, wedding day etc. — because most guests probably won’t have seen them before.

Don’t be afraid to include some funny or embarrassing ones — an awkward high school yearbook photo or some questionable college-era style choices. It’s part of what makes this concept work; the more self-deprecating, the more it’ll make guests smile.

Rather than only draw upon your own collection, consider asking friends and family members to lend you some of their photos of the guest of honor from significant periods of their life. That way you might discover some less familiar photos—perhaps even some the guest of honor might have forgotten or never even seen before.

If you need to transfer old printed photos to a digital format, this can be done very inexpensively nowadays ($20-$30 for 100 photos) and it’s a great opportunity to preserve them for years to come. Similarly, old photos that are fading, discolored, or damaged can often be restored at the same time. See links below.

Some milestone birthdays are available as ready-made designs with the non-editable age in the center square (see Milestone Birthdays button below), but for other ages, click the ‘any age / occasion’ button below and use the personalize this design option to replace the monogram letters EA with whatever age you want.

For other occasions, delete the non-editable text that currently reads ‘Happy Birthday’ and select ‘Add Text’ to replace it with text of your choice. Then change the font, size, and color accordingly.

If you don’t feel confident using the online customization tool to personalize the design, note that there’s a new feature available at checkout where for a few extra dollars an expert will check and fix any issues before it goes to print, for peace of mind.
