Friendship Lamps

the idea

Let close friends or family know when you’re thinking of them with these long-distance Friendship Lamps that light up when either of you touches them.

the how

  • Style. Choose between the original mosaic acrylic lamp or the wood mini lamp.
  • Quantity. Sold individually or in pairs. Order at least two so you and your friend or family member can communicate, or add extras if you want to sync a group.
  • Setup. Needs a 2.4GHz home Wi-Fi connection with access to your router. It won’t connect over 5GHz-only networks, public Wi-Fi with its own login page, or campus and workplace networks that need a separate sign-in.
  • How it works. Touch your lamp and every synced lamp lights up the same color, wherever it is. Each touch cycles through a new color, or you can assign each person a fixed color if you’re syncing more than two.
  • Auto-off timer. Set how long the glow lasts before fading: 30 minutes, 1.5 hours, 8 hours, or 24 hours.
  • Remote Touch. On the wood version, an optional paid app add-on lets you send and receive touches even when you’re away from your own lamp. The core touch-to-touch function needs no subscription.
  • Power. Built to US electrical specs, so it needs a plug adapter or converter for use outside the US and Canada.
  • Lead time. Ships within 24 hours.
  • Where to put it. Works anywhere there’s an outlet and Wi-Fi. A nightstand, a side table, or a kitchen counter are all popular spots, since you’ll want to actually notice it light up.

the why

WHY This Idea?

  • Connection; a physical reminder of the relationship itself, so they think of you every time they see it light up.
  • Two-way; unlike most gifts, you keep a matching lamp yourself, so the connection runs both ways, not just from you to them.
  • Easy; reaching out takes one touch, not a text to write or a call to schedule.
  • Ongoing; keeps the connection going day after day, not just on the day you gave it.
  • Thoughtful; shows that real thought has gone into choosing a gift that means something.
  • Feel good; makes the guest of honor feel loved, appreciated, and good about themselves.
  • Emotional; people remember how a gift made them feel, not what it cost.
  • Memorable; thoughtful ideas are the ones people remember and treasure.

the why

Why Gifts Should Be One of Three Things

  • Meaningful and sentimental; a gift that celebrates the person or your relationship with them creates a real emotional connection that people remember.
  • Quirky and unexpected; something unusual, unique, or playful, tied to their interests or sense of humor, the kind that gets a laugh, but is more than a cheap gag gift.
  • Indulgent; a treat, an experience, or a luxury you know they’d love but would never buy for themselves, that they can enjoy guilt-free.

ADVICE FROM A PRO

Matt’s tip

Matt James professional event planner

“If this is going to someone less comfortable with tech, like a grandparent, I’d set up your own lamp and test it first. Then, if you can be there when they open theirs, walk them through the one-step Wi-Fi setup together in person, so it’s already glowing before you leave rather than sitting in a box for weeks.

If you’re syncing more than two lamps, I’d assign a different color to each person, so a glance at the glow tells you who’s thinking of you before you’ve even reached for your phone.

Note that dorm rooms, shared offices, and military bases often run Wi-Fi that needs its own login page or is 5GHz-only, and this won’t connect to either. If it’s going to a college student or someone in shared or base housing, it’s worth having them check with their building’s front desk or IT before you order, rather than finding out once it’s already wrapped.

For a going-away, deployment, or move-abroad gift, I’d hand it over before they leave rather than after, and set both lamps up together in the same room first. Watching them glow together while you’re still standing side by side is what makes that first touch feel like a promise to stay in touch, once the goodbyes are over.
