the why

WHY This Idea?

  • Elevated; a low-effort way to make simple, home-made, or store-bought foods look and feel more special
  • Snack Size; perfect for serving smaller snacks for guests to graze on during a cocktail party
  • Portion Size; helps control portion size of more expensive ingredients
  • Atmosphere; guests can nibble while chatting and mingling, which helps keep the energy up
  • Layout; helps achieve the three simple rules for layout; groups, rows, and levels (see Matt’s Tip section below)
  • Unusual; a less common way to present party food to impress guests
  • Value; low cost idea that creates a big impression
  • Reusable; can sometimes be washed and re-used for future events

the why

Why You Need Small Plates / Bites

  • Visual impact; individual portions lend a stylish, modern, and professionally-catered look to your spread
  • Batch cooking; dishes can be made in big batches in advance then portioned at the last minute
  • Work-load; friends and family can contribute dishes which can then be divided into appetizer cups, takeout boxes, mason jars, or martini glasses to make them look more stylish
  • Less waste; guests tend to take one portion instead of loading up their plate so there’s far less waste
  • Clear up; high-quality disposables can be recycled or thrown away after the event to reduce clearing and cleaning time

ADVICE FROM A PRO

Matt’s tip

Matt James professional event planner

“These disposable tasting spoons are a great way to regulate portion size when it comes to more expensive food, such as shrimp and smoked salmon.

Alternatively, you can use them to make basic, inexpensive, or homemade food, such as stuffed tortellini, deviled eggs, or cocktail meatballs, look and feel a little more special.

Check out my Pinterest board Party Food: Serve on Spoons for more sweet and savory food ideas to serve on tasting spoons.

These look best when presented in groups of the same dish, arranged either in rows on square or rectangular serving plates, or in a circle on round plates (see below for premium disposable serving plates).

Alternatively, you can also present them on stands and risers (see links below), which is a great way to add additional height to your buffet table display.

For more about the three simple rules for layout; groups, rows, and levels, see my Dessert Table Layout page because the principles are the same for buffet tables.

These disposable tasting spoons are typically approx 4″ long by 2″ wide, however for a slightly larger alternative, you could consider Asian soup spoons (link below).

Although these are intended to be disposable tasting spoons, some people have said they pop them in the dishwasher so they can be used again for future events.

For more individual serving ideas like this, check out the Cold Small Plates section of my Buffet Table Ideas page or my Dessert Table Presentation page for sweet treats.”
