Charcuterie Cups

the idea

Ease congestion at the buffet and allow guests to snack while mingling by serving individual ‘grab & go’ charcuterie portions in these customized cups.

the how

  • Set size. Choose how many cups you need — sets typically run from 12 up to 60.
  • Customization. Enter the wording you want printed: a name, age, date, monogram initials, or short phrase, depending on the seller. Character limits vary by seller, from around 250 up to 500 characters, so keep the wording tight regardless.
  • Style. Most sellers also offer a choice of label style or color.
  • Format. These are kraft paper, cone-shaped cups, about 4.6 inches tall and 3 inches across the top, sized to hold roughly 12oz. Leak-proof and sturdy despite being disposable paper.
  • Process. Submit your wording through the personalization field at checkout. The seller designs the label and applies it to the cup before shipping — there’s nothing for you to stick on yourself.
  • Labels only. Some sellers also sell just the labels on their own, so you can apply them to your own cups if you already have some or want to keep costs down.
  • Lead time. Production takes 3 to 6 days.
  • Filling. Food not included (duh!). Fill with charcuterie favorites just before serving — cured meats, cheese, olives, crackers, breadsticks, and fruit.

the why

WHY This Idea?

  • Less congestion; pre-portioned into individual cups, guests can grab one quickly instead of queuing at the buffet while the person in front slowly loads up their plate
  • Atmosphere; guests keep mingling and snacking instead of clustering at the buffet, which helps keep the energy up
  • Mobility; guests can eat standing up while chatting and mingling, rather than needing to sit down
  • Quantities; easier to visualize quantity needed per person compared to planning a large shared charcuterie board
  • Less mess; individual cups mean no spills at the buffet table, no half-empty serving trays, and no one mixing up serving forks and tongs
  • Personalized; customizing cups with a name, age, date, or monogram is an easy way to make them look more elegant and feel more special
  • Inexpensive; a cost-effective idea, particularly the labels-only option

the why

Why You Need Small Plates / Bites

  • Visual impact; individual portions lend a stylish, modern, and professionally-catered look to your spread
  • Reinvented; makes simple, home-made, or store-bought foods look and feel more special
  • Portion control; easier to regulate portion size and reduce over-consumption of expensive items
  • Batch cooking; dishes can be made in big batches in advance then portioned at the last minute
  • Work-load; friends and family can contribute dishes which can then be divided into appetizer cups, takeout boxes, mason jars, or martini glasses to make them look more stylish
  • Less waste; guests tend to take one portion instead of loading up their plate so there’s far less waste
  • Clear up; high-quality disposables can be recycled or thrown away after the event to reduce clearing and cleaning time

ADVICE FROM A PRO

Matt’s tip

Matt James professional event planner

“These work just as well as passed-around appetizers during a drinks reception as they do on the buffet table itself. Set a few out while you’re waiting for the last guests to arrive, or to bridge the gap before more substantial food comes out, so nobody’s stuck drinking on an empty stomach for too long.

For the labels, rather than just printing the name, date, and occasion, I always think it’s better to inject a little personality where possible — it’s more entertaining for guests. For a milestone birthday, “Not Dead Yet” or “Too Late to Die Young” will get more of a reaction than just “Ella’s 50th Birthday.” For a graduation, “Smarty Pants” or “Not Just a Pretty Face” is more fun than “Jake’s Graduation.” Check out my full list of creative occasion phrases here for more ideas.
