the idea

the how

  • Fill with:
  • Salads: Caesar, caprese, pasta, corn, potato, Waldorf, etc.
  • Shrimp cocktail
  • Charcuterie
  • Layered taco dips
  • Sushi cups
  • Ceviche
  • Veggies & dip
  • See more ideas below
  • Size. Ranges from around 4oz up to 9oz. A 4 to 5oz cup suits most bite-sized appetizers; go bigger if you’re adding a sauce or dip.
  • Set size. Comes in packs of 20 up to 240.
  • Disposable or reusable. Some are single-use plastic; others are hard plastic or acrylic and can be washed and used again.
  • Utensils. A few sellers include mini spoons or forks in the set, which saves a separate purchase if you need them.
  • Personalization. Customize by adding a sticker (see links below).

the why

WHY This Idea?

  • Elevated; a low-effort way to make simple, home-made, or store-bought foods look and feel more special
  • Snack size; perfect for serving smaller bites and nibbles for guests to graze on during a cocktail hour or drinks reception
  • Less congestion; allows guests to ‘grab and go’ to reduce lines and congestion around the buffet table
  • Atmosphere; guests can snack while mingling, which helps keep the energy and atmosphere up
  • Mobility; guests can eat standing up while chatting, rather than needing to sit down to eat
  • Quantities; easier to visualize the quantity needed per person compared to planning large platters and bowls
  • Less mess; individual cups mean no messy buffet table spills, no half-empty serving bowls, and no one mixing up serving forks and spoons
  • Inexpensive; a cost-effective way to make simple food look good
  • Value; a low-cost idea that creates a big impression
  • Reusable; several styles are washable, so you can use the same cups again for future events

the why

Why You Need Small Plates / Bites

  • Visual impact; individual portions lend a stylish, modern, and professionally-catered look to your spread
  • Special occasions should feel special; presentation makes party food look and feel less everyday
  • Portion control; easier to regulate portion size and reduce over-consumption of expensive items
  • Batch cooking; dishes can be made in big batches in advance then portioned at the last minute
  • Work-load; friends and family can contribute dishes which can then be divided into appetizer cups, takeout boxes, mason jars, or martini glasses to make them look more stylish
  • Less waste; guests tend to take one portion instead of loading up their plate so there’s far less waste
  • Clear up; high-quality disposables can be recycled or thrown away after the event to reduce clearing and cleaning time

ADVICE FROM A PRO

Matt’s tip

Matt James professional event planner

“These appetizer cups are such an easy way to make ordinary simple homemade food feel more special. Just a little clever styling and presentation can completely change people’s perception of a dish.

Check out my Pinterest board ‘Party Food: Serve in Cups’ for more menu ideas. And if you’re after dessert inspiration specifically, take a look at my Disposable Dessert Cups post, which covers mousses, jellos, and layered fruit desserts served the same way.

I think they look best when presented in groups of the same dish, arranged in rows, and displayed on square or rectangular premium disposable serving plates or on tiered stands / risers (see links below).

Alternatively, you can also present them on cake stands and risers (see links below), which is a great way to add additional height to your buffet table.

For more about the three simple rules for layout; groups, rows, and levels, see my Dessert Table Layout page because the principles are the same for buffet tables.

Note these disposable appetizer cups come in different sizes, ranging from 2 oz to 9 oz. I’d recommend using at least a 4 oz as anything less would probably be a bit too small a portion.

To reduce lines at the buffet table, make these ‘grab & go’ by serving with a mini fork or spoon (see links below), depending on the dish.

Remember to order the right size spoon / fork depending on the size of your appetizer cups. Mini spoons and forks are typically around 4″, and regular spoons / forks are around 6″.

To personalize, you could add a custom sticker (links below) or use personalized disposable spoons / forks printed with your event name (see links below).

Although these are intended to be disposable appetizer cups, some people have said they pop them in the dishwasher so they can be used again for future events.”
