  • Use for:
  • Shrimp ceviche or shrimp cocktail
  • Traditional salads, such as Caesar, Greek, Caprese, or Waldorf
  • Taco salads
  • Pasta salad
  • Potato salad
  • Noodle salads
  • BBQ coleslaw salad
  • Sushi cups
  • Charcuterie
  • Salty snacks, nuts, or trail mix
  • Format. Available as martini or coupe glasses, wine goblets, champagne saucers, or wide champagne flutes, most with a detachable stem for easy serving and stacking.
  • Capacity. Ranges from around 2oz mini glasses up to 15oz goblets, though most sit between 5 and 10oz.
  • Set size. Packs run from 12 up to 100, and some bundles include matching cocktail picks or mini spoons.

the why

WHY This Idea?

  • Substantial portions; allows you to serve larger, more substantial, and filling portions without guests needing to sit down to eat
  • Elevated; a low-effort way to make simple salads and pastas feel more special
  • Uniformity; ensures any homemade dishes made by friends and family don’t look homemade
  • Elegant; lends your buffet table an elegant and sophisticated touch
  • Adds Height; varying degrees of height are essential to a well-designed buffet table (see Matt’s Tip below for more)
  • Less congestion; pre-portioned, guests can grab one quickly instead of queuing at the buffet while the person in front slowly loads up their plate
  • Atmosphere; guests can eat standing up while chatting and mingling which helps keep the energy up
  • Quantities; easier to visualize quantity needed per person compared to planning large bowls on a buffet table
  • Less mess; individual portions mean no spills at the buffet table, no half-empty serving bowls, and no one mixing up serving spoons
  • Inexpensive; a cost-effective party idea that won’t blow your budget
  • Value; low cost idea that creates a big impression
  • Reusable; can sometimes be washed and re-used for future events
  • Unusual; a less common way to present party food to impress guests

the why

Why You Need Small Plates / Bites

  • Visual impact; individual portions lend a stylish, modern, and professionally-catered look to your spread
  • Portion control; easier to regulate portion size and reduce over-consumption of expensive items
  • Batch cooking; dishes can be made in big batches in advance then portioned at the last minute
  • Less waste; guests tend to take one portion instead of loading up their plate so there’s far less waste
  • Clear up; high-quality disposables can be recycled or thrown away after the event to reduce clearing and cleaning time

ADVICE FROM A PRO

Matt’s tip

Matt James professional event planner

“Serving food in disposable martini glasses, wine goblets, or champagne saucers is such a great way to make simple, homemade, or even store-bought food look far more fancy than it is.

Check out my Pinterest board Party Food: Served in Glasses for recipes and ideas.

These look best when presented in groups of the same dish, arranged in rows, and displayed on square or rectangular serving plates (see links below for premium disposable serving plates).

Alternatively, you can also present them on stands and risers (see below), which is a great way to add additional height to your buffet table display.

For more about the three simple rules for layout; groups, rows, and levels, see my Dessert Table Layout page because the principles are the same for buffet tables.

To reduce lines at the buffet table, make these ‘grab & go’ by serving with a disposable wood or plastic spoon / fork sticking out of the food (see links below).

Although these are intended to be disposable, some people have said they pop them in the dishwasher so they can be used again for future events.

For more individual serving ideas like this, check out the Cold Small Plates section of my Buffet Table Ideas page or my Dessert Table Presentation page for sweet treats.”
