Custom Photo Cups

the idea

Bring a smile to guests’ faces by customizing party cups with cute, funny, or embarrassing old photos of the guest of honor ‘through the years’.

Three clear photo cups on a party table, each printed with a different boy’s yearbook photo and “Vintage 1973,” gold and white straws in the background

the how

  • Customization. Personalize with a photo of the guest of honor and a short caption — a name, an age, or a year. Most designs use a caption in the style of “Vintage [year],” “Est. [year],” or “[Name] is [age]!”, and most sellers send a digital proof for approval before printing.
  • Format. Cups come frosted or clear, plain or stadium-cup style, with lids and matching straws offered as optional add-ons by some sellers.
  • Sizing. Ranges from 9oz up to 16oz, with 16oz the most common choice.
  • Materials. Frosted cups tend to be a heavier polypropylene plastic while clear cups are generally standard single-use disposable plastic. Worth checking which you’re getting if reusability matters to you.
  • Setup. No assembly needed — cups arrive printed and ready to fill, with nothing to peel, soak, or stick on yourself.
  • Lead times. Processing typically takes 1 to 5 business days, though a couple of sellers need 10 to 14+ days for fully custom designs — worth checking before you order if your date is close. Standard shipping adds a few more days on top.

the why

WHY This Idea?

  • First impression; the welcome drink is one of the first things guests experience, and a personal touch there sets the tone for the night.
  • Entertaining; lets guests see the guest of honor at different stages of their life that they might never have seen before.
  • Light-hearted; a warm way to celebrate the guest of honor that shows they don’t take themselves too seriously.
  • Talking point; clever little details and personal touches create talking points, buzz, and atmosphere.
  • Photo-worthy; the kind of detail that guests photograph, share and remember.
  • Memorable; guests remember creative, unusual, or unexpected elements.
  • Creative twist; adds a personal or unexpected element to everyday drinks.
  • Easy; a low-effort way to add something special to the drinks without complicated recipes or bartending skills.
  • Inexpensive; a cost-effective idea that won’t blow your budget.

the why

Why Your Party Drinks Deserve More Attention

  • Always in hand; guests hold a drink for most of the party, so it’s one of the more visible and easily overlooked opportunities to make an impression.
  • Presentation over complexity; thoughtful presentation and a creative twist on a simple drink is often more memorable than an elaborate cocktail that most guests won’t appreciate.
  • Attention to detail; it’s the clever little details — not the drink itself — that guests photograph, share, and remember.
  • Budget-smart; spend a little more to make the first drink memorable, then ease into simpler, cheaper pours for the rest of the evening.

ADVICE FROM A PRO

Matt’s tip

Matt James professional event planner

“Instead of using one photo for the whole order, split it into three or four smaller batches, each using a different photo of the guest of honor at a different stage of life — a baby photo, a school photo, a photo from their twenties, etc. It makes it much more entertaining for guests.

If your budget’s tight, save these for the welcome drink to make a big first impression, then you can move on to regular party cups later.

If it’s a birthday, a “Vintage [year]” or “Est [year]” caption works well, but if you want something with a little more personality, such as “Not Dead Yet,” “Still Got It,” or “Too Late to Die Young,” check out my full list of creative occasion phrases here for more ideas for all occasions.

If you need to transfer old printed photos to a digital format, this can be done very inexpensively nowadays ($20-$30 for 100 photos) and it’s a great opportunity to preserve them for years to come. Similarly, old photos that are fading, discolored, or damaged can often be restored at the same time. See links below.”
